The Delta House of Assembly Committee on Housing, Women Affairs, Humanitarian Support Services, and Girl Child Entrepreneurship has called on Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to manage their funds prudently. This appeal was made by the Committee Chairman, Mrs. Bridget Anyafulu, during an oversight visit to the relevant ministries on Thursday in Asaba.
Mrs. Anyafulu emphasized the importance of judiciously utilizing budgetary allocations to effectively implement the State government’s “MORE Agenda” policies and programs.
“I urge them to be prudent and make sure they make use of every money budgeted for their ministries so that the people of the State will see that Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration has been able to carry every citizen along,” she stated.
Representing the Oshimili South Constituency, Mrs. Anyafulu explained that the visit was part of the committee’s constitutional responsibility to ensure optimal performance by the MDAs.
“It is our constitutional duty to make sure we carry out oversight functions. This is one of the reasons we are elected into the State House of Assembly. We have been able to meet with the three ministries involved in our committee to ensure that monies budgeted from different perspectives are judiciously used. We are happy with what they have done and have also looked into their challenges to see how we can forge ahead,” she added.
Mrs. Anyafulu commended the ministries for their implementation of the “MORE Agenda” policies, particularly praising the Ministry for Women Affairs and Social Development for its achievements over the past year. She encouraged the ministry to address its major challenges in the next budget.
During a visit to the Ministry of Housing, the committee urged the ministry to consider Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to tackle the state’s housing deficit, acknowledging that “the government alone cannot do it all.”
The committee also lauded the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services, and Girl Child Entrepreneurship for the successful launch of the “MORE Grant Scheme for petty traders and artisans” in the state. They recommended establishing a comprehensive social register for the poor and vulnerable to ensure the effective implementation of government programs.
Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Godknows Angele, outlined the state government’s housing initiatives and highlighted the ministry’s challenges, seeking the committee’s support during the next budget preparation.
Additionally, Commissioners for Women Affairs, Mrs. Pat Ajudua, and Humanitarian Affairs, Ms. Orode Uduaghan, detailed their respective ministries’ activities and appealed for more support from the State Legislature.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mrs. Anyafulu was accompanied by committee members, including Mrs. Marilyn Okowa-Daramola (PDP – Ika North East), Mr. Augustine Uroye (PDP- Warri South I), and Mr. Bernard Odior, the Chief Whip of the Assembly.
