The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has moved closer to establishing the Akwa Ibom State University of Education in Afaha Nsit, as the bill for its creation passed its second reading on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
Titled “A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Establishment of Akwa Ibom State University of Education, Afaha Nsit, and to Make Provisions for its Administration and for Other Purposes Connected Therein,” the legislation is sponsored by Hon. Nsidibe Akata, PhD, representing Eket State Constituency, alongside thirteen other lawmakers.
The proposed university is set to train educators to meet both national and global standards, with the bill also seeking to repeal the Akwa Ibom State College of Education Law, Cap 31, replacing it with provisions for the new university.
While leading deliberations, Hon. Akata highlighted the need to overhaul outdated curricula currently in use at the College of Education. He stated that upgrading the institution into a university would modernize teacher training, nurture educational leadership, and position Akwa Ibom to meet global demands in education.
“The Akwa Ibom State University of Education, if established, is poised to become a hub for developing future educators and enhancing the state’s educational standards,” he remarked.
The bill proposes the university will offer a variety of academic and professional programs, awarding certificates, first degrees, diplomas, and higher degrees across different educational fields. It also aims to foster research and development through collaborations with both local and international institutions.
Deputy Speaker Hon. Kufreabasi Edidem, supporting the bill, noted that many colleges of education nationwide have been upgraded to universities of education. He stressed that converting the current institution, which operates as a distant learning campus for the University of Uyo, into a state university would ensure generated resources remain within Akwa Ibom.
Engr. Udobia Udo, representing Esit Eket/Ibeno State Constituency, also endorsed the bill, stating that the institution has the potential to attract students nationwide, thereby boosting Akwa Ibom’s educational profile.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong commended Hon. Akata for sponsoring the bill, describing it as pivotal to the advancement of education in the state and the country at large. “This is a vital step to equip the state for modern educational challenges,” he said.
The Speaker subsequently referred the bill to the House Committee on Education for further scrutiny and announced a public hearing to gather input from stakeholders.
